Nine persons killed in road accident in Ekiti, one critically injured

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Ekiti State, has confirmed that nine persons lost their lives in a road crash in the state.

Information had it that the bus they were travelling in collided with a truck said to be travelling in the same direction on the Awo – Igede road in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Wednesday morning.

A source in Awo community told newsmen that the bus had run into the truck which they said was travelling ahead and conveying planks, thereby losing control and causing the truck to equally lose control.

Information gathered said the nine people died at the scene as they were mangled in the crushed bus, while one of the passengers was said to have been rushed to the hospital.

According the community sources, the Toyota Hiace Bus, with registration number EKY 978 XJ was believed to be travelling from Lagos, while the origin of the trailer attached to a DAF truck with registration number XB 404 FKA was not immediately known.

Residents of the community said they believed that the bus was heading to Abuja, the destination of the truck was not immediately known.

The accident occurred in front of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Igede – Awo road.

The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Mohammed Olowo, while giving details of the accident said the possible cause of the accident was “over-speeding and loss of control.”

The FRSC said the accident had occurred at about 6:15am, and that 10 people were involved.

He said the bodies of the dead had been deposited at the mortuary of Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti while the injured was also taken to the same hospital.
