A 22-year-old Masvingo woman went berserk recently, biting off, chewing and swallowing a piece of her husband’s first wife’s finger as relations in the polygamous marriage went sour.
Tendai Nhidza pleaded guilty to domestic violence charge when she appeared before Masvingo magistrate Peter Madhibha on Wednesday.
She was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment wholly suspended on condition she performed 450 hours of community service.
Prosecutor Edmore Mapope told court that Nhidza and her victim Netsai Deke, (34) are both married to one husband with Nhidza being the second wife of the two.
Court heard that on 19 July this year at the family’s homestead in Village Mazodze under Chief Shumba in Masvingo, the family was collecting some manure when the elder wife asked the husband to help them cut a log they intended to use for fire wood.
The husband did not respond and the elder wife was angered by his silence resulting in a verbal altercation between the husband and the elder wife.
Court was told that Nhidza in turn was also angered by the way the first wife was shouting insults at their husband.
She picked some stones which she used to strike the first wife once on the head and once on the leg.
As if that was not enough, Nhidza charged at the first wife and grabbed her left hand before biting off her forefinger which she chewed and swallowed.
Deke fled the homestead and filed a police report before being taken to Morgenster Mission Hospital Mission hospital for treatment.
