The Police in Anambra State on Monday lost two of its men to dare-devil armed bandits at the Upper Iweka part of Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra State.
It was gathered that the robbers, operating with a motor-bike took the police team by surprise, and shot them at close range, before dispossessing them of an AK47 rifle belonging to one of the Policemen.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the policemen, Inspector Cyril Onyia, who was rushed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi was confirmed dead on arrival while the other, sergeant Ike Anari, died on the spot.
It was further learnt that the deceased were said to be attached to Operations department, Awka and were on patrol when they met their untimely death.
Confirming the incident, the Onitsha Police Area Commander, an Assitant Commssioner of Police (ACP), Mr. Yahaya Abubakar, said the incident took place in Awada that is within Awka Area Police command.
It would be recalled that no fewer than five Policemen have been killed within a space of three months in Idemili and Onitsha axis this year, an ugly development some keen observers of events in the state said may not be unconnected to the build-up to the November 18, governorship election.
