The Fleet Commander, Western Naval Command (WNC) and member of the disbanded presidential committee probing arms purchase, Rear Admiral Daniel Ikoli, has allegedly committed suicide at his Lagos residence.

Ikoli reportedly shot himself on the chest with his service gun- a CZ 999 Scorpion pistol- marked 17111 in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Nation gathered that detectives recovered three expended shells of ammunition and the gun which had 17 rounds of .9mm live cartridges.

Ikoli, who was Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT before his appointment into the arms probe committee, was reportedly found in a pool of his blood.

His 8B, Rycroft residence looked deserted, while few of the domestic aides found on the street denied knowledge of the incident.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased left office on Tuesday afternoon after complaining he wasn’t feeling too well.

It was also learnt that it took him a long time to alight from his vehicle when he got to the office that morning.

Ikoli’s colleagues told our correspondent the Navy commander was battling an undisclosed illness, which made him to lose weight. He also became withdrawn and was no longer his usual boisterous personality.

Those close to him said the senior officer was battling depression allegedly caused by high dollar rate and unavailability of Foreign Exchange (FOREX) for his children’s school tuition.
