Funminiyi Afuye is Ekiti Assembly Speaker, Akeem Jamiu Deputy Speaker

A former Commissioner for Information and ex-leader of Government business in Ekiti State, Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, has emerged the Speaker of the 6th assembly in the state.

Hon. Afuye, is representing Ikere Constituency 1, while a former Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation to Governor Kayode Fayemi, Hon. Akeem Jamiu, was elected as the deputy speaker. He represents Irepodun/Ifelodun Constituency 11.

The assembly had earlier been proclaimed by Governor Kayode Fayemi, according to the constitution of Nigeria.

Other principal officers were announced by the speaker, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, as Majority Leader, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan, Ikole 1, Deputy Leader, Hon. Tajudeen Akingbolu, Ekiti West 1, Chief Whip, Hon. Bunmi Adelugba, Emure and the Deputy Whip, Hon. Tope Ogunleye.

Governor Kayode Fayemi, in his speech at the inauguration of the 6th assembly, commended the 5th assembly for working with the executive with diligence and progress of the state during their short period with the current government in the state.

Governor Fayemi, said his government will continue to promote harmonious working relationship with the legislature while maintaining their institutional independence.

He urged the lawmakers not to be a rubber stamp legislators to the executive arm of government while discharging their duties to the people of the state.

He said “you can be assured of our avowed commitment to honouring the principles of mutual respect and accountability in your day to day activities as enshrined in the constitution”.

Fayemi, who noted that “today is no doubt historic in the life of our dear state as we begin the journey of great expectation together with the 26 legislators elected from the same party to represent 26 constituencies in the 16 local government of Ekiti State.

In his acceptance speech, the speaker of the new assembly, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, said the new lawmakers would work for the peace and development of Ekiti State and collaborate with the executive arm for the development of the state and the people.

He promise that the lawmakers will pay attention to good governance for the well being of the people in Ekiti State and the societal good, promising that the lawmakers would not take the honour reposed in them for granted.

The ceremony was attended by traditional rulers, former lawmakers, political leaders, government officials and well wishers of the lawmakers.
