Little will a nation grow without elders and leaner will the hopes of the people be when the wise councils of the aged are trampled upon. Respect and good followership are basic tenets of good youth-hood. When such is not the case, things fall apart; the center no longer would hold it and the tomorrow we hope for becomes a mirage and tomorrow leaders will remain in the making.
The unguided utterances of members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against a former governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu has stirred many who would question the level of regard Igbo have for their elders, selves and traditional institutions. A question is, why would youths, tomorrow leaders haul unprintable names at their fathers?
Igbo adage has it that, it is through respecting that a woman gives birth to her like. Another also has that when one respects and serves the King, Kingship gets to him. It is a great concern the plight young people, especially Igbo youths under the umbrella of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are taking. Continuing on the track of disrespecting elders will not only stout their efforts to good leadership but create a bad future for the coming generation as there won’t be any to lead them aright.
Igbo should not be labeled negatively by the activities of IPOB loyalists. Igbo shouldn’t. There should be a measure of sanity in their approach to matters such as has been counseled by the former governor whom they have since the week mapped out for attack in various media platforms in negligence of his swift interventions towards insuring that peace reigns not minding which side, either IPOB or the Federal government, is right but stands firmly on his call for a united Nigeria that is restructured to favor the a whole Nigeria.
The is so wrong for some minds which would likely fail a psychiatrist’s test be misinforming young people, turning their minds against their elders, fathers and leaders. Only a demented mind will favor such. In a statement released by IPOB which is not different from their stock in trade of insulting any opposing voice while threatening fire and brim stone even when they are dogs without a tooth made such utterances as “Orji Uzor Kalu and his co-conspirators must await the fury of the people which is slowly building up… the mob in Biafraland [will] descend on all traitors in no distant time.
Planning and executing the mass murder of IPOB members including our leader and looking to cover up your complicity with bare faced lies, will expose and render Orji Uzor Kalu inconsequential and expose him for the Hausa Fulani slave he truly is. The masses will set an example with the likes of Orji Uzor Kalu, Okezie Ikpeazu and Willie Obiano in no distant time that other quislings like them may learn.”
But, the question is why would the leaders of IPOB use young Igbo sons as scapegoats? How many of these youths have died and how many of these so called IPOB leaders have died or lost their loved ones to this struggle? Should the young men be dead while Nnamdi Kanu and his parents go on hiding under the guise that he was taken away by the military? Such is an antic of a fearful and unprepared freedom fighter.
The pilots of IPOB must recognize the fact that Kalu has done wonderfully well for Igbo nation and Nigeria at large. Casting negative words on Kalu does not count and cannot dent the good image of Kalu. If that Kalu supports a strong and united Nigeria, that is his opinion as you have your opinion for a divided Nigeria where new humans shall be created by Nnamdi Kanu to inhabit.
If Kalu is supporting a united Nigeria just as Dim Ojukwu did before his death as he contested the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, does that make him to favor the intimidations of Igbo by the North, if such thing exists? If so, wouldn’t ill-prepared call for the separation of Igbo label Nnamdi Kanu as an Igbo hater as he had put in line the lives of millions of Igbo who are inhabiting in the northern part of Nigeria?
How much more does Emma Powerful and other want to be educated on the need to respect and recognize the good efforts of their kinsmen than the word of Leader of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, Shettima Yerima who has frowned at the unprecedented manner they have been labeling Kalu. In his words to news men, he said, “A man who has frequently shuttled the North to discuss the safety of his people deserve more than appreciations.
If they couldn’t contain their pot of insults and decides to extensively extend it to even the ones sticking their neck on their behalf. It simply shows how irresponsible, ungrateful and unappreciative they can be.” This is the same Yerima of the Coalition of Northern Youths(CNY) with 15 other groups that issued a threatening statement on June 6, 2017, advising Igbos living in the northern region of the country to leave before October 1,2017.
IPOB must know that no amount of unprintable names directed at Kalu can erase who he is in the minds of Nigerians; his benign gestures to Emma Powerful, Nnamdi Kanu and even his father. IPOB must leave Kalu alone and face the issue at hand.
