Ivlyn’s debut Christmas album has an alluring sound. Rarely has a hybrid of new wave and experimental reggae, led to such a masterpiece. The singer is continuously giving a patchwork of genre smashing sounds.
Ivlyn Mutua has packed a lot of life into her thriving career since moving to Nairobi from the countryside. In 2011 she studied in Kenyatta University majoring in Music.
Later she got a permanent job in Nairobi chapel as a worship leader. Here, she developed a deeper devotion to Christianity, thus decided to be a full time gospel artist. However, In 2015-2016 she got a taste of the secular world when she decided to become a background vocalist for various artists on Coke Studio Africa.
Afterwards she took a long break and right after transitioned fully into a secular artist.
‘Missing you’ a track she holds close to her heart, was a song she wrote remembering her late cousin who in her words was “like her best friend”. This Ballad track features a sweet sounding, emotional chorus that takes you deep. Missing you is one of the original song to be featured in the ’12 Beats of Christmas’ album.
Ivlyn Mutua has created an extroverted electrified song with a professional sounding sonic boost that makes you yearn for more. Missing you is a compelling chorus and the lyrics are smart, thoughtful, unflinching and self-aware as she sings directly from her heart.
The song takes you through a story in which the artist not only reveals her journey through challenges with life specifically death, but also acknowledge that it wouldn’t be possible without the help of family who helped in staying positive through it all.
On 12 Beats of Christmas, she has collaborated with a number of big names in the music industry including, Fena Gitu, Trina Mungai, Atemi, Mordecai, Mbithi, Sage and Wyre the Love Child to mention but a few.
This album has a little something for everyone as it captures a variety of genres including Ballad, Salsa, Dancehall and R&B. In addition to her lyrical prowess, which is a highlight in the album, the tracks were done by renown producers; Vicky Pon Dis, Chris Adwar, ABH Sounds, Dan Aceda, Ilogos Music and Mutoriah.
This journey of creation led to the production of 12 Beats of Christmas; 6 original songs and 6 covers.
