Newshub understands a man is in custody after a reported stabbing on a busy central Auckland street.

The incident took place at about 2:45pm on Thursday afternoon, and police were called to the scene shortly afterwards.

A woman is being attended to by emergency services, but the nature of her injuries has yet to be confirmed.

Police say a man is helping them with their enquiries.

Multiple police cars and ambulances are currently stationed at the intersection of Short St and Anzac Ave in the CBD.
A cordon has been set up outside the Wilson parking lot on Anzac Ave.

An eye witness told Newshub he chased the alleged assailant to Customs St East before losing sight of him.

He says the man dropped a handbag as he was running, which he is believed to have snatched from the victim, and that the bag contained a knife.

NZME reports that a witness saw a man stabbing a woman “in the back and in the front” with a kitchen knife.
