Paris Hilton is claiming she invented the selfie, according to a new magazine feature.
The hotel heiress and reality TV star shot to fame in the early 2000s after the release of a s*x tape and later – like former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key’s son Max – tried to reinvent herself as a dance music DJ.
Hilton is featured in a new issue of W Magazine, which states she invented “the maligned but ubiquitous selfie”, adding she agreed to being “the matriarch of the modern phenomenon”.
“If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it,” said Hilton.
“I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera.”
She also claimed to have “started a whole new genre of celebrity that no one had ever seen before”.
Self-portrait photographs were “invented” long ago, with a December 1920 selfie identified as the potential first.
The bold W claim is not the first time the Hiltons returned to tabloid headlines this week, after Paris’ little brother Conrad mouthed off in an LA courtroom and was admonished by the judge for doing so.
