Pastor of the Christ Chosen Church of God, Ngbeken Elvis, has been arrested by police in Edo State in connection with the sudden death of a 38-year-old housewife. The mother of four, identified simply as Mama Sarah, died while procuring abortion for the pregnancy she allegedly had for Elvis.
The 32-year-old cleric and the woman were said to have been locked in a secret romance for over six months. Mama Sarah’s husband resides abroad. The adulterous relationship began after Elvis prayed for the woman which eventually resulted in pregnancy.
The late Mama Sarah’s husband had built a house for his family where the wife and children live at Okhokhugbo community in Egor Local Government Area. The housewife was said to have died at a hospital where she was rushed to after the abortion became complicated.
Elvis, now in police custody, disclosed that he was suspended from the church over marital issues. According to him, he engaged in extramarital affair with the late Mama Sarah because his lawfully wedded wife was in the habit of always fighting him since they got married in December 2016.
The suspect said the church suspended him because he could not settle problems he had with his wife. His problem was compounded as the family of Mama Sarah’s husband is demanding a refund of the bride price it paid to marry her.
The family members are also insisting that Elvis must take care of the burial expenses after performing the marriage rites. The cleric told journalists that his late lover used to give him N2,000 to run errands for her.
He said: “I was just posted to Okhokhugbo branch when I got suspended because of my marriage. I know this Mama Sarah when she was ill. I prayed for her and she promised to reward me. We started dating but the children were not aware.
When one of her daughters wanted to raise suspicion after some neighbours questioned my continued visits to their house, she threatened to throw the girl out of the house. “She asked me to move into their house three months ago before I could get an apartment and I was staying there.
I am an orphan. I didn’t plan to get into this mess. She didn’t tell me she was pregnant. I was not aware she went to procure abortion. I am really ashamed. I prayed God to forgive me. I am now remorseful. She used to give me N1,000 or N2,000 to run errands for her.” Efforts to get the comments of the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, yesterday failed as his phone was switched off.
