Scientists have said that pregnant women that are exposed to high radiation levels from sources like cell phones, wireless devices and cell towers miscarried at nearly three times the rate as those exposed to low levels.
This finding was reported in ‘Scientific Reports,’ an online open access scientific mega journal. According to lead author, Dr. De-Kun Li, a senior research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California in the United States (US), this should make people rethink the notion that magnetic field non-ionizing radiation exposure is safe or has no health risk.
However, rising from the study, the researchers asserted that cell phones, cordless phones and other wireless devices, appliances, power lines, smart-meter networks and cell towers generate non-ionizing radiation from magnetic fields.
Li and his team called rapidly proliferating electromagnetic field emissions “a ubiquitous environmental exposure and a serious looming public health challenge.” Findings in this study should be of significant interest to Nigerian women, particularly low income and rural women, most of whom expose themselves to cell phone radiations due to the way they handle the telephone sets.
It is a common practice among market women to put cell phones in the brassieres, under head scarves while using phone lighting for commercial purpose. Some women feel very comfortable putting their phones inside their tummy area while using their wrapper to hold the phone in place. It is not a surprise that many of the women may not be aware of the danger carrying cell phones in such manner could pose to health.
