Multiple attacks were early yesterday carried out by suicide bombers around the NNPC depot on Damboa Road, Maiduguri. Police spokesman, Victor Isuku, confirmed the blasts. A witness, Abubakar Kaumi, told newsmen at the scene that the blast occurred around 3 a.m.

“A woman suspected to be a suicide bomber walking alongside two girls came round the depot. They detonated their explosives near some petrol tankers parked there and destroyed the three vehicles. Nobody was close by, so, only the three bombers died,” Mr. Kaumi said.

An official of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abdul Ibrahim, also confirmed the report. He said the fire caused by the explosion was brought under control. Residents said they tried to convince two bombers not to detonate their IEDs but were ignored. The Ward Head of Abba Kerti area along Damboa Road in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC), Bulama Adam, told Daily Trust that one of the young girls initially wanted to change her mind and give up the mission but later went ahead.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Damian Chukwu, told newsmen that there was no record of civilian casualty except the bombers. “Two of the bombers detonated while the third was gunned down by a soldier,” he said.
